THE JOHN BROOKS SLAUGHTER CENTER FOR ENGINEERING DIVERSITY
In 2023, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering named its Center for Engineering Diversity in honor of Dr. John Brooks Slaughter. Both the Center—which was established 50 years ago, and has been a pioneer in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts for decades—and Dr. Slaughter—who was the first Black leader of the National Science Foundation, and one of the first Black engineers to lead major universities such as UMD and Occidental College—have rich and remarkable histories. This video celebrates both of those histories, and shows their interconnection over many years.
In an era where Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts are finally achieving the level of prominence and importance that they deserve, it is critical for institutions to communicate effectively about their own efforts—both to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for potential students, faculty and staff, and to procure additional much-needed support from donors and other organizations.
